A Registergericht is the specialized court located at the local court responsible for maintaining and managing the
commercial register, cooperative register, partnership register, and association register. Entrepreneurs, start-ups, and companies of all legal forms must register their business, amendments to
articles of association, changes in management, capital measures, or dissolutions through notarized applications. The Registergericht reviews the legality of each application, decides on entries or rejections, and stores register files electronically. It is a central player in German corporate law and plays a key role in company formation, M&A transactions, and
compliance. In many federal states, central Registergerichte have been established for efficiency, such as the AG Charlottenburg for all of Berlin or the AG Munich for Upper Bavaria. Legal remedies against decisions of the Registergericht are governed by the provisions of
voluntary jurisdiction (§§ 382 ff. FamFG). Important: The Registergericht is part of the judiciary, not the administration; it should not be confused with the register authority. Fees for each entry are incurred, as specified in the Commercial Register Fee Ordinance. Electronic retrieval of HRB data is available via the joint register portal of the states.
